Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss Ice Cream

6 Mar

I don’t just have a sweet tooth – I have a mouth full of sweet teeth. I get so crazy for sweets it’s almost disabling. It’s sad that I’m a sugar fiend, but it’s even more sad that I recently found out I’m allergic to cane sugar. All that sugar I was eating was slowly poisoning me and making me feel crappy. It’s been about 10 days since I completely cut out sugar from my diet, and let me tell you, it’s ROUGH. Cane sugar is used in everything from bread to Cheerios to peanut butter. I’ve been to Whole Foods three times in the past 10 days; trying out new foods, figuring out how to change my eating style, having a nervous breakdown in the middle of the aisle while I read a million labels. It’s stressful. And all I want to do is go to Starbucks for a chai and a chocolate chip cookie.

I’ve been searching for some kind of sweet treat I can have that doesn’t contain sugar. After all this effort, all the annoyance, I want some food I can look forward to. I’m not the kind of person that craves something sweet and eats two dates, as if that counts as a sweet snack. Fuck that. I want ice cream.

And ice cream I shall have! That’s right, my new best friends Luna and Larry have created an ice cream that doesn’t contain sugar or dairy (I’m also lactose intolerant. It’s amazing I can eat any foods at all). The ice creams are also free of all kind of other allergens (soy, gluten…) and are vegan. Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss ice cream is my sweet salvation. Not all the flavors are cane sugar free, but I’m happy to even have one sweet treat I can eat. (Poet. I know it.) My Whole Foods doesn’t carry all the flavors, but they have dark chocolate, which is sweetened with agave instead of sugar. Dark chocolate is the only flavor I’ve tried, but I’m sure the other flavors are awesome. The dark chocolate is rich and tastes just like normal-people ice cream. When I indulge in this sweet reward, it makes all that angst over what I can eat worth it.

My husband has a mouth full of sweet teeth too!
And I have allergies myself so I understand the frustration of searching and searching, and the joy of finding something that is okay and is amazing too! Our only flavor that contains cane sugar is the Mint Galactica in the chocolate chip.

I’m excited to try other flavors besides dark chocolate. My local Whole Foods doesn’t have a huge selection – I’ve told them I want cappuccino!

You should put agave on a banana and then douse it in sugar-free cocoa powder. It’s a delight.

That sounds so good I’m gonna try that yesterday. I’m constantly searching for a way to get my next chocolate fix.
