Marc by Marc Jacobs Totally Turnlock Wallet

8 Jun

I’m always wanting new things. Whether it’s trying something new or upgrading something I already have, I’m on constant lookout for the latest and greatest. Lately I’ve been finding cases for my phone and completely falling in love and coveting them, even though I have three perfectly good iPhone cases already. A few nights ago I recognized this problem, but I’m definitely not looking for a cure to this addiction.

Admitting I have a problem made me realize a few other things about myself. It was a very introspective night, in terms of my material possessions. Thinking about all the things I own, and how I’m always looking for something better, I realized there’s one thing I’ve had for years that I’ve never once considered changing: My wallet.

I don’t remember exactly when I bought my Marc by Marc Jacobs Totally Turnlock wallet. I’m going to guess it was at least 2009, but it could easily be earlier than that. That may not seem like that long to you. Maybe you’ve been rocking the same wallet for 10 years. Bully for you. But I’m a professional avid shopper, and for me that’s a long time to stick with one accessory.

I bought this wallet after shopping around for a few months. I’d seen this one, and liked it, but of course I needed to shop around and see if there was anything better. There wasn’t really a wallet out there that I liked as much, and then this particular color was on sale at Nordstrom and BOOM, here we are today.

The things that initially drew me to this wallet:

1) It’s long. I don’t know the proper lingo, but it’s the size to hold a checkbook and dollars without folding them.

2) The inner compartment, divided in two. This is a great catchall space for change, receipts, business cards, and stuff you just need to quickly throw somewhere and deal with later.

3) The zipper! This realtes to the inner compartment, because when you throw your crap in there, you don’t want it floating around and falling out. This wallet zips up and holds all your papers and pennies securely inside.

Just look at all that crap I can fit in there. And it’s still thin! In fact, if I want to streamline, I can fit my phone and keys in this wallet and use it as a clutch. Granted, it’s a little cramped in there, but when you’re just running out to pick up takeout or whatever this can be a really handy trick.

This exact wallet is no longer available, but there’s another Turnlock wallet that’s basically the same, but without the front pockets mine has. The pockets are superfluous anyway. At least I never use them. Anyway, this version of the wallet is more streamlined, but the inside looks like it’s exactly the same.

Like I said before, I got my wallet on sale. I don’t remember exactly, but I think it was in the $140 range. Even if I were paying full price, though, I’d still buy it. Think about it: I’ve had mine for at least three years, probably more, and I’ll have it for years to come. I use it every day, multiple times a day. So my cost per use is like, a ha’penny a day. Maybe less. Maybe at this point I’m making money off this thing. I never thought I’d be using a single accessory for this long, but my Turnlock wallet and I are going strong, and I have no plans to replace it.
