Yves Saint Laurent Volupte Sheer Candy Lip Balm

17 Jan

I have been lusting after Yves Saint Laurent’s fabulous Volupte Sheer Candy lip balm for what seems like forever. I’ll be honest with you, 80% of why I wanted it was because of the packaging. I mean, just look at it. Is that not the most luxe, gorgeous packaging you’ve ever seen?

I’d fantasize about pulling a tube of Volupte Sheer Candy out of my bag and touching up my lip color, looking like the chicest, most pulled-together M-er F-er anyone’s ever seen. Basically, I thought this lip gloss would turn me into Kate Middleton. The only downside: A tube of this miraculous fancifier costs $30. And it’s sheer lip color. I just couldn’t justify spending $30 on what’s basically tinted lip balm. If you strip away the fancy packaging it’s really no different from my other preferred tinted lip balm from Burt’s Bees.

But I’m all about treating myself, especially for my birthday. I get myself something (or a few little somethings) every year, and this year I decided to throw sensibility out the door and buy a tube of Volupte Sheer Candy in 06 (Luscious Cherry). I was torn between Luscious Cherry and Mouthwatering Berry, but I decided the Berry was a little too similar to Clinique’s Black Honey, which I already own like three tubes of. (Wondering if I have a slight lip product addiction? I totally do.)

I decided Luscious Cherry was different than my usual lip color choices – a little brighter, a little bolder. I’ve already admitted that I was mostly interested in the packaging  so we don’t need to talk about how I spent a few solid minutes just holding the tube and staring at it once I got it home. I wasn’t surprised at how enamored I was with the look of the tube. I WAS surprised at how much I loved the look and feel of the actual balm. It glides on like butter (which, coincidentally, is Paula Deen’s preferred lip balm) and the color is totally buildable. The shade can be super sheer with just one quick application, or you can put on a few layers for a deeper look. This is a sheer balm, so reapplication is a must, but that’s kind of one of my favorite aspects of this balm, since I’m all about whipping out that beautiful tube and going Full Middleton.
