FAQ

If you have any questions, or just feel like having a chat, feel free to leave a comment, tweet me (@sarchrz), or email me (sarchrz@gmail.com), or send a telegram (I prefer the singing kind). Anywhoo, these are some facts about me, in case you were wondering.

What’s your name?

Sarah. (That was easy.)

Where do you live?

I currently live in Los Angeles, but I’m originally from Central Illinois.

How old are you?

27

What’s the point of this blog?

I love finding that one perfect thing that solves a problem or makes your life more amazing. I’m mostly interested in beauty, but I’m wary of saying this is a “beauty blog,” because sometimes I’ll tell you about a teakettle or something else that I’m currently loving. The idea is that I’m here to (figuratively and, for a small fee, literally) grab you by the face and say, “This, you need.”

Are your reviews/posts sponsored?

Unless otherwise mentioned, everything I review has been paid for, tested, loved, and written about by yours truly. There are ads on this blog, and sometimes links to products will be affiliate links. If you have a product you’d like to see featured on ThisYouNeed.com, feel free to email me at sarchrz@gmail.com.

Why are you so into beauty?

There are two things I’ve been obsessed with for as long as I can remember: Art and beauty products. I never took a dance class or played a sport as a kid, because every time my mom asked what activities I was interested in, my answer was always, “ART!” So I took a million art classes and never played whiffle ball or whatever else. This interest in art extended into an interest in makeup. If you think about it, as a kid, why would I have wanted to paint on a canvas when I could paint on my own face?! The beauty bug has stayed with me my whole life, and now I find makeup as a great way to express myself, and also help me feel more confident. Because I often feel pretty crappy, I find that if I take time to put on a little makeup, I can see myself not as a sick person, but as a pretty lady who’s about to take life by storm. When you’re feeling down on yourself and your life, it’s amazing what some concealer and lipstick can do to perk you up.

What’s this sickness/disability you refer to in some posts?

I have fibromyalgia, endometriosis, and many co-occurring conditions that affect my everyday life in pretty big ways. This You Need isn’t a “sick person” blog, although I do happen to be a Professional Sick Person, and sometimes I’ll blog about that part of my life. I want to share my experiences so that non-sickos can understand the life of a Professional Sick Person a little better, and also provide support and recommendations to people who are dealing with illness. If you’re interested in more information about chronic illness, you should check out this “Letter to Normals,” which I think does a great job of helping a non-sick person understand where us Spoonies are coming from. Oh, and an explanation of what a “Spoonie” is can be found here.

Is your illness why you follow such a weird diet?

Kind of. I realized a few years ago that my diet was affecting the amount of “bad days” I was having. I was also getting crippling migraines every. single. day. I took a very expensive and complex allergy test and started an elimination diet, and I learned what my trigger foods were. I had to cut out cane sugar, dairy, and gluten from my diet. It helped immensely. Seriously, if you’re feeling generally crappy but can’t figure out why, try an elimination diet. It takes forever and is, admittedly, a huge pain, but it helped me go from having a migraine every afternoon to never having migraines at all. If you’ve ever experienced migraines, you will understand that this is a huge deal.

That was two years ago. I’ve now been able to reintroduce some foods, but I still monitor what I eat pretty closely. Trace amounts of trigger foods are no longer an issue, and I’ve been able to introduce cane sugar again (albeit in small amounts). Gluten and alcohol still give me the pukes. (That was your next question, right? Of course it was. We all know you’re puke-curious.)

I don’t eat this way because I’m jumping on a fad diet bandwagon or because I believe we should all eat this way (actually, I believe the exact opposite. Sugar and gluten are what make things delicious). This diet is a colossal pain in the butt and I’d love to avoid it – BUT, it has made me feel better than any other treatments I’ve tried. Because this is a hard lifestyle to stick to, I love to recommend any food options I discover that taste good and are allergy friendly. Please don’t confuse having food allergies/intolerances with being a health nut or a vegan. I’ll take a red, rare steak over a quinoa salad any day, and I spend a significant amount of time searching for the perfect allergy-friendly cakes and cookies.

Who’s Hero?

Hero De Niro is my Boston terrier. He’s currently 5 years old, and I got him as a puppy from an Amish family in Illinois. Hero’s a libra that loves to spend time either snoring or murdering weasels. He has no say in the content of this blog, because he would just recommend chewing on overpriced baby toys and inadvertently dutch-ovening yourself.

Oh man, Hero sounds adorable, if flatulent. Where can I look at a million pictures of him?

Hero is pretty much the star of my Instagram.

That Instagram is pretty awesome. Where else can I find you on the Internet?

Before I streamlined my schtick and started focusing on reviews/recommendations, I blogged at Don’t You Bongo. You can find me on Tumblr and on Twitter. I’m have a Vine, but I rarely use it. I avoid Facebook. You can find links to some of my freelance writing here.

Anything else I should know?

I’m horribly nearsighted. Literally, not metaphorically.

I have a BA in Gender and Women’s Studies. (And an unfinished minor in linguistics.)

I love theme parks. Actually, we should add that to my list of lifetime obsessions: Art, beauty products, and theme parks.

Oh, add dinosaurs to that list too. When I was first told about dinosaurs I was like, “Are you SERIOUS?! That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever heard!” I was maybe two years old, and dinosaurs have been my absolute favorite animals ever since.

The staff of my local Starbucks know me and my order by name, because I’m there at least once a day.
